Her biggest chart hit was “Never Been in Love Before,” written and produced by Jimmy Scott, which reached number seven on the R&B charts, and two more songs followed.
She sang backup vocals for Michael Jackson in a free concert at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre in Bandar Seri Begawan on July 16, 1996. The Brunei Royal Family attended the performance to commemorate Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, turning fifty. Hicks performed the female portion of Jackson’s duet “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” as part of the setlist.
She appeared in three episodes of Star Trek: Voyager as T’Pel, Tuvok’s wife.
In the Babylon 5 episode “And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place,” she sings the gospel hymn “There’s No Hiding Place Down Here.”
Hicks made an appearance on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ album Mosquito in 2013, as part of Broadway Inspirational Voices on the first tune “Sacrilege.”
